9/18: Covered theoretical yield and percent yield and next discussed solution concentration (M) and dilution. Assigned problems 4.53-4.73, odd.
9/19: Discussed solution stoichiometry, electrolytes vs non-electrolytes, and strong and weak acids. Tomorrow, start lab "Identity of an Unknown Compound."
9/20: Started lab.
9/12: Continued lab, will finish on Monday.

September 24 - September 28

9/24: Finished lab. Tomorrow, back into chapter 4.
9/25: Chapter 4 homework quiz. From chapter 4, covered precipitation reactions and writing total and net ionic equations. Tomorrow, acid-base reactions and titration.
9/26: Discussed acid-base reactions and titrations. Assigned homework 4.75-4.93, odd.
9/27: Lab quiz for "Identity of Unknown Compound" and switched discussion to chapter 15, talking about definitions and characteristics of acids and bases including Arrhenius and Bronsted-Lowry.
9/28: Back in chapter 15, covering Bronsted-Lowry conjugate acid-base pairs, strengths of acids and bases, Ka and Kb, and autoionization of water, Kw. Also, presented a tentative schedule through the middle of October, including the three titration labs to begin around 10/8 and the next exam around 10/19 covering chapters 1-4, 15 and 16.

October 1 - October 5

10/1: Continued with chapter 15 by discussing Kw and calculating the hydronium ion concentration when given the hydroxide ion concentration and vice versa. Also discussed calculating pH and pOH and the pH of a strong acid or base. For a weak acid or base, introduced using an ICE table to determine the hydronium ion concentration before calculating the pH. Assigned problems 15.33-15.75 for homework. Tomorrow, continue with chapter 15.
10/2: Discussed determining the pH or pOH of a weak acid or base utilizing an ICE table.
10/3: Continued in chapter 15 by discussing pH of salts of strong/weak bases and strong/weak bases, using ICE table. Also, discussed the relationship between Kb and Ka, where Ka X Kb = Kw. Tomorrow, start chapter 16.
10/4: Started chapter 16 by discussing buffers and calculating the pH of buffer solutions. Handed out prelabs for the next three titration labs beginning Monday; "Standardization of NaOH," "Titration of Vinegar," and "Titration of an Unknown Diprotic Acid."
10/5: Discussed Henderson Hasselbalch equation for calculating the pH of a buffer solution, including how to determine the amount of acid/base to create a buffer of specific pH. Also, discussed titration curves and the lab for Monday concerning the standardization of NaOH solution. Monday, begin the "Standardization" lab.

October 8 - October 12

10/8: Started Standardization of NaOH lab.
10/9: Demonstrated titration of KHP. Tomorrow, continue titrations.

10/31: Continued chapter 5 by discussing Boyle's and Charles' laws. Diprotic lab and lab quiz tomorrow.
11/1: Lab quiz today; tomorrow hand back exam 2 for corrections and lab cleanup.
11/2: Handed back exam for corrections, due Monday. Discussed STP conditions and Ideal Gas Law.

November 5 - November 9

11/5: Continued discussion on the Ideal Gas equation, including discussion of molar volume, and density. Assigned problems 5.29-5.63, odd. Informed students that from now on, homework will be collected on the exam date and a grade given for completion.
11/6: Covered mixtures of gases and Dalton' Law of Partial Pressure, including collecting gases over water.
11/7: Finished chapter 5 by covering KMT, temperature and molecular velocities, mean free path, diffusion, and Graham's Law of Effusion. Assigned for homework, additional problems 5.65-5.95, odd.
11/8: Started chapter 6 on Thermochemistry by discussing the nature of energy and units.
11/9: Free study day in the library.

November 12 - November 16

11/12: Reviewed last exam corrections and allowed students time to do background internet research on finding appropriate chemical tests for unknown compound on a humidifier filter. Tomorrow, back into chapter 6.
11/13: In chapter 6, discussed forms of energy and energy transfer, system vs. surroundings, and the first law of thermodynamics.
11/14: Covered heat capacity and specific heat, including examples of calculations using the formula q = mS(delta)T. Handed out prelab for "Molar Mass of Volatile Liquid," lab starts Monday.
11/15: Covered w = -P(delta)V and bomb calorimetry, including solving several problems. Assigned for homework problems 6.33-6.53, odd. Tomorrow, work on prelab for Volatile Liquid lab and lab cleanup for open house on Sunday.
11/16: Reviewed prelab for Volatile Liquid lab beginning on Monday. Lab cleanup for open house on Sunday.

November 19 - November 23

December 3 - December 7

12/3: Started chapter 17 on Thermodynamics, covering the concept of entropy. Also, assigned for homework problems 6.33-6.93, odd. Handed out prelab for Neutralization of Phosphoric Acid to start on Thursday.
12/4: Continued in chapter 17 by discussing delta S and the second law of thermodynamics. Tomorrow, continue in chapter 17 and discuss prelab for Thursday.
12/5: In chapter 17, introduced Gibb's Free Energy and its relationship to enthalpy and entropy. Tomorrow begin the "Neutralization" lab.
12/6: Started "Neutralization" lab.
12/7: Finished "Neutralization" lab and continued in chapter 17 covering standard entropies and calculation of entropy change in a chemical reaction using standard entropies. Assigned problems 17.27-17.77, odd for homework. Next exam covering chapters 5, 6 and 17 will be on Thursday, December 13. The "Neutralization" lab is due Friday, December 14 and there will be a lab quiz.

December 10 - December 14

12/10: Finished chapter 17 by discussing calculation of delta G using standard free energies of formation and the relationship of free energy and equilibrium.
12/11: Students worked on homework, prepared for Thursday's exam and studied for Friday's lab quiz.
12/12: Reviewed for exam over chapters 5, 6 and 17 tomorrow.

1/9: Continued in chapter 7, discussing interference and the photoelectric effect. Assigned problems 7.37-7.47, odd for homework.
1/10: Started film on quantum mechanics from NOVA on PBS. Finish film tomorrow and move students into lab stations with new lab partners.
1/11: Finished film on quantum mechanics and moved new lab partners together to new lab stations. Monday, go over prelab/project and continue in chapter 7.

January 14 - January 18

1/14: In chapter 7, lectured over emission spectra, Rutherford's atomic model, Bohr's model of the atom and DeBroglie's wave equation. Assigned for homework, problems 7.49-7.57, odd.
1/15: Covered complementarity, Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, energy of electrons, and quantum numbers and atomic orbitals. Tomorrow, period table project begins. Theme???
1/16: Started Quantum Theory Challenge #1. Continue project tomorrow.
1/17: Quantum Theory Challenge project, tomorrow back into chapter 7. Project is due Tuesday, 1/22.
1/18: Finished chapter 7 and assigned remaining odd problems from the chapter as homework, 7.59-7.73. Quantum Challenge projects are due Tuesday, 1/22. Also on Tuesday, start chapter 8.

January 21 - January 25

1/21: MLK Day, no classes.
1/22: Snow day, no classes.
1/23: Start chapter 8, poster project due.
1/24: Back in chapter 8, discussing quantum numbers, shielding and penetration, as well as sublevel energy splitting in multielectron systems.
1/25: Continued discussion of electron configuration, including the exceptions to the Aufbau principle. Also discussed trends in atomic radius. Assigned additional homework problems, 8.43-8.89, odd.

January 28 - February 1

1/28: Covered trends in ionization energy and electron affinity. Tomorrow, finish chapter 8 by covering trends in metallic character, the halogens, alkali metals, and noble gases. Wednesday, start chapter 9 on bonding.
1/29: Finished chapter 8, discussing trends in metallic character, alkali metals, halogens, and noble gases.
1/30: Started chapter 9 on bonding, discussed Lewis theory and electron dot structure.
1/31: Continued discussion of bonding especially Born-Haber cycle and lattice energies and trends.

2/5: Continued with chapter 9 discussing Lewis structures, resonance structures, and formal charges. Lab start date rescheduled for Monday, 2/11.

February 11 - February 15

2/13: In chapter 9, covered bond energies and calculation of enthalpies of reaction using bond energies. Also, discussed trends on bond energy and length.
2/14: Started chapter 10 covering molecular geometries and VSEPR Theory.
2/15: Continued in chapter 10, discussing orbital hybridization or Valence Bond Theory. "Beer's Law" lab due Tuesday, 2/19, and there will be a quiz.

February 18 - February 22

2/18: Presidents' Day, no classes.
2/19: "Beer's Law" lab due today, also, a lab quiz. Started "Molecular Geometry" lab, finish lab tomorrow.
2/20: Finished "Molecular Geometry" lab. Tomorrow, finish chapter 10.
2/21: Finished chapter 10, tomorrow review for exam on Monday. Monday, exam over chapters 7-10, homework form these chapters is due on Monday as well.

2/27: Started chapter 13 on Kinetics. Tomorrow is part 1 of the I.U. C125 Lab Final Exam.

3/1: Junior retreat, remaining students worked on their take home exam for chapters 7-10.

March 4 - March 8

3/4: Part 2 of the C125 Lab Final Exam. Tomorrow, review for C105 Lecture portion of the final exam.

3/27: Finished coverage of chapter 18 by discussing effects of concentration on cell potential and the Nernst equation. Handed out take home exams for Kinetics and Electrochemistry, which are due April 11. Students can work on their exams tomorrow in class and on the Tuesday, April 9, after we return from spring break.

April 22 - April 26

4/22: Watched DVD #8, Alkenes and started chapter 5 on Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers. Tomorrow, lab on Chromatography.
4/23: Changed the schedule, today viewed DVD #9, Reaction Energy Diagrams and worked on naming aromatic compounds. Lab will be tomorrow.
4/24: "Chromotography" lab. Tomorrow, Naming Organic Compounds #3 and analyze chromatograms with UV light.
4/25: Practice Naming Organic Compounds quiz. No class tomorrow so Naming Organic Compounds #3 quiz will be Monday.

5/10: Viewed DVD #13, Electrophillic Reactions II and had a short quiz over DVD's content. Monday, start "Aspirin Synthesis" lab.

May 13 - May 17

5/13: Started "Aspirin" lab.
5/14: Continued "Aspirin" lab.
5/15: Worked on "Aspirin" lab and started chapter 8 on Amines and Amides.
5/16: Continued in chapter 8. The "Aspirin" lab will be expanded to include melting point determination following recrystallization and will be worth 100 points. Also, on Friday the Organic Take Home test will be handed out and will be worth 200 points. It will be due on the day of your final exam. Post lab for "Aspirin" lab will be due Thursday, May 23.

May 20 - May 24

5/20: Viewed DVD #14: Electrophilic Reactions III and took quiz.
5/21: Worked on finishing "Aspirin" lab and Organic take home test.
